BioWes at Aquaculture Europe 2014
BioWes will be presented at the international conference Aquaculture Europe 2014 held in San Sebastian, Spain on October 13th -17th, 2014. Participants can join the workshop (October 16 from 14:00 to 14:45) or presentation (October 16 from 15:50 to 16:10). BioWes system can be tested directly in our exhibition corner from 14:10 to 17:10 too. BioWES Applications at the University of South Bohemia
- Light microscopy – Institute of complex systems is focused on the basic research in the field of light microcopy. The system BioWES is used for the storage of data obtained from the experimental microscope build for the experiments for image content description using information theory. The system helps to organize various experiments to understand the data transformation from the real object to the image.
- Crayfish and fish behavior – BioWES system is used for the data and metadata management of the research for water quality monitoring (development of the systems) based on the bio-indicators. The data from the experiments related to the development of system for crayfish hear beat monitoring and 3D tracking of the fish are stored in the repository.
- Biocompatibility – System BioWES is tested in certified laboratory focused on the analysis of biocompatibility of new materials. The laboratory is working under the certification ČSN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005 with defined methodology for data collection and defined steps for contract management. The system BioWES will be tested in the laboratory to prove the usability in the business conditions. The core of the experiments is cell cultivation and cell behavior analysis using light microscopy.

BioWES in Bioinformatics
Project BioWES was introduced to the Czech bioinformatics community at ENBIK2014 conference: http://ich.vscht.cz/enbik2014.
Bioinformatics research deal with the collection, analysis and visualization of the enormous datasets produced by next generation sequencing.
BioWES Training
The pilot installation of the local server was implemented for Aquaexcel consortium. The solution was tested by 14 Aquaexcel members from different countries during training session which took place within Aquaexcel annual meeting in Vodňany, Czech Republic. Experimental data taken from different biological experiments (crayfish as bio indicator, fish coloration based on Algadiet, bio-compatibility of materials) were saved into the repository. Participants were trained to use BioWES. Feedback will be provided to further improve the system.
BioWES Demo in Heidelberg
BioWES system was demonstrated in EMBL (European Molecular Biology Laboratory) in Heidelberg, Germany. Further interest in testing of the system was confirmed by Vladimir Beneš, Head of Genomics Core Facility and by Jürgen Zimmermann. Testing period will take several months.

The Aquaexcel consortium decided to test the local database of the BioWES system as a potential experimental data management tool.
The consortium consists of 17 partner institutions from Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Spain and the UK. The competences of these institutions range from biological sciences to technology and expertises such as system modelling and design. See www.aquaexcel.eu for details.
The 15th ICSB Conference
The 15th ICSB conference will take place in Melbourne in September 14 – 18, 2014. It will continue the annual series of conferences launched by the International Society of Systems Biology (ISSB) in Tokyo in 2000, by Hiroaki Kitano.
The conference will bring top system biologists from all over the world to an environment that encourages integration of biology, computer science, engineering and chemistry, and that spans leading areas of biomedical research.
